Apple pie is a popular dessert, not only in the United States but worldwide as well. It is often served with ice cream, whipped cream, or even by itself.
Nothing quite matches that mouthwatering experience of walking into a home and being greeted with the aroma of freshly baked apple pie with cinnamon and spices.
American housewives created the original apple pie recipe in the early 1800s, but it has evolved over time and now there are many variations of this dish. The most popular version of apple pie is made with fresh apples, eggs, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter.
The following recipe is my take on this favorite dessert dish.

Instructions
Pastry Dough
- Add the flour, sugar, and salt together in your mixing bowl.
- Crumb the cold butter into the flour mixture.
- Add the water and vinegar and mix thoroughly until the dough is smooth.
- Divide the dough into 2 equal-sized disks, cover with cling wrap, and place in the refrigerator to cool for 1 hour.
Apple pie filling
- In a separate bowl combine the apple slices, sugar, salt, and spices and mix gently until the apple slices are evenly coated with the spices.
Preparing the pie
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the 1st disk of pastry into a circle of approximately ½ cm in thickness.
- Lightly flour your 22 to 23 cm round pie dish.
- Line the pie dish with the dough and trim any excess.
- Add the apple slice mixture to the pie dish.
- Divide the tbsp of butter and dot the top of the pie mixture with the dollops of butter.
- Roll out the remaining dough into a circle of ½ cm thickness.
- Place over the dough either as a solid sheet or cut strips and plait the top.
- Pinch the edges of the crust together to create a fluted edge to the pie,
- Brush the pastry top with the egg wash (egg mixed with milk).
- Sprinkle cinnamon sugar evenly over the top of the pie.
- Use a knife to make a small snip opening in the middle of the top layer of the dough to allow steam to escape while baking (if you used a solid sheet of dough)
- Bake the pie in a preheated oven at 190° C for 50 minutes.
- Allow the pie to cool for 2 hours before slicing and serving.
- Bon appetit
Apple pie is best served warm with cream or vanilla ice cream but can also be enjoyed cold and by itself.
